Ashura (عاشوراء) is observed on the 10th day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar. It is a day filled with spiritual reflection, fasting, and remembrance. For Muslims around the world, Ashura is not just a historical event but a day that represents faith, sacrifice, and divine mercy.
At Best Quran Lesson, we aim to spread Islamic knowledge and awareness about the days that matter. As we approach 26th June 2025 (10th Muharram), let’s explore the significance of Ashura.
Ashura has multiple layers of significance in Islamic history:
When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ migrated to Madinah, he found that the Jews fasted on this day to commemorate the victory of Prophet Musa (AS) over Pharaoh. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“We are closer to Musa than they are,” and he fasted on that day and encouraged others to do the same.
(Sahih Muslim 1130)
Fasting on the 10th of Muharram expiates the sins of the previous year.
“Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope Allah will expiate thereby the sins of the year that came before it.”
(Sahih Muslim 1162)
🔹 Sunnah Tip: Fast on the 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th of Muharram to distinguish from other religious practices.
Ashura also marks the tragic martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali (RA) in the Battle of Karbala. His bravery and stand for truth are remembered with love and sorrow by millions of Muslims, especially from the Shia tradition.
📿 Why Should Muslims Observe Ashura?
✅ Follow the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ
